In an interesting review. I'm not certain though that a carbohydrate intake of 50-60% of total energy intake is required for maximum performance IF you keep protein intake higher (especially during fat loss phase, for the satiating and thermogenic effects of increased protein intake). During mass gaining I think it's more favorable to follow the guidelines simply because you get to eat more food, and that is easier accomplished with a higher carb/protein ratio. Might also be the case during fat loss if you do a lot of high repetition work which is more taxing on the glycogen system.
This is only my spontaneous thoughts and I haven't really had time do dig deeper into the other literature available. Anyone else thinking otherwise i would love to know?
Yeah I also thought that for cutting, a carb intake of 50-60% was much too high. I've done good with 20/50/30 (P/C/F) when getting down to ridiculous levels. It looks like they're saying total caloric deficit is more important which it is, but still...
Yeah, I agree that the total caloric deficit is THE most important thing but a diet higher in fat and protein is way easier to stick to. So And I'm not sure performance would be lower IF the protein intake is high enough. Shit, have to find more time to search through pubmed on this one...
